Young Chefs: Cooking with Gluten

About the Lesson Plans:

  • Gluten Explorers

Lesson Goals: To encourage learners to explore what celiac disease is and how gluten affects the bodies of people living with celiac disease. This lesson also aims to empower learners to share the knowledge they gain through a series of interactive activities. Activities include: learning how to read nutrition labels, testing common foods for gluten content, and learning how to bake gluten free sugar cookies from scratch.

  • Young Chefs

Lesson Goals: To learn about scientific experiments, the immune response to gluten, and to compare baking gluten-free vs. gluten-containing brownies. Activities include: baking gluten-free and gluten-containing brownies, testing for gluten content, learning about scientific methods, and an explanation of the immune response to gluten in patients with celiac disease.

  • Gluten Detectives Activity

Lesson Goals: These activities were created in conjunction with Julie Salato and the Gluten Detective Agency. There are six activities that fit into a “time traveling” theme. Activities include: reading nutrition labels, games to understand celiac disease pathology, microwave cooking, a play-doh activity, how to write a public service announcement about being gluten free, and an activity to give Robobot advice on how to be gluten free.
